Some situations require stronger security. Your home may not require a
vault door, but a bank certainly does! WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
encryption has been proven to be a fairly weak standard. See
here
for the gory details. WEP, along with other measures, will achieve an
adequate level of security for almost all home users. It is NOT
bullet-proof. Given enough time and intercepted traffic, wireless networks
secured using WEP can be compromised.
HIPAA
regulations also require health-care providers to ensure the privacy of
patients' records. DCNS can help you achieve HIPAA compliance with
wireless hardware.
There are several ways to make a wireless
network more secure than the baseline measures discussed
here.
-
Install wireless hardware
and software that is capable of using the 802.1x EAP
standard
-
Implement a virtual
private network (VPN)
-
Give up on using wireless
(for now)
The 802.1x and VPN solutions significantly increase
the costs associated with installing a wireless network. DCNS can help you
decide on which wireless security solutions would work for you.
There are several standards in the works
that supposedly address current wireless security weaknesses. Only time will tell if
these new standards will be more effective. For now, it would be best to
implement the highest level of appropriate security.
